Crete, 1889, before and during one of the many Cretan uprisings, which aimed to liberate the island from the Ottoman Turks. Kapetan Michalis is an uncompromising Cretan, whose sacred duty is the liberation of his island. However, the moment he meets Emine, wife of his blood brother Nuri-bey, he is possessed by a demon. The decision whether to follow his duty or succumb to his passion will have a catalytic effect.  Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel Kapetan Michalis (published in English translation as Freedom or Death), upon which the film is based, was inspired by the author’s childhood memories of his father in Crete. It won international acclaim; translated into many languages, it is Kazantzakis’ best-selling work worldwide. 

Ταινία βασισμένη στο ομώνυμο μυθιστόρημα του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη. Η σκηνή είναι η Κρήτη, το 1889, την εποχή μιας σημαντικής εξέγερσης των Κρητών ενάντια στην οθωμανική κυριαρχία. Για τον Καπετάν Μιχάλη, έναν ασυμβίβαστο Κρητικό, η απελευθέρωση της Κρήτης είναι ιερό καθήκον.
