“Lanthimos creates a languid, elliptically fractured, and maddeningly opaque, yet strangely transfixing and, on rare occasion, even sublime meditation on ennui, desolation, and ritual.” Strictly Film School
Yorgos Lanthimos’ self-assured debut feature foretells the signature surreality of his oeuvre to come, and receives a rare cinematic screening at GFF 2016.
A plainclothes cop with a passion for automobiles, tape recorders and Russian women investigates a series of murders in Kinetta – a defunct Greek resort town inhabited by migrant workers during the off-season.
Enlisting the help of a photo-store clerk, part-time videographer and hotel maid, the policeman directs dramatic re-enactments to help him solve the crimes, although the science behind his methods is questionable. The oddball trio barely speaks as they concentrate on perfecting – in intricate and exhaustive detail – the murders and their individual performances as the female victims.
