Greek Film Festival closes with the classic film America America

The 2005 Greek Film Festival of Sydney will close this Sunday September 25 with the classic film America America directed by Elia Kazan.

The Festival has secured the only 35mm print worldwide of Elia Kazan’s 1963 classic, from the British Film Institute.

America America portrays the odyssey from Asia Minor to America of an innocent young man escaping the horrors of the times. Raised in an Anatolian village, Stavros is sent to Constantinople with the family’s jewels and prayers, however he harbours a dream - to live in America.

In Constantinople he is exposed to the harsher realities of life - unemployment, homelessness, muggings, murder and prostitutes. Stavros escapes by swindling a ticket to America and assuming the identity of an Armenian shoeshine boy. Armed with a new name and a job he settles in New York and succeeds in bringing his family to the land of hope and opportunity.

"Elia Kazan gives a penetrating, thorough and profoundly affecting account of the hardships endured and surmounted at the turn of the century by a young Greek lad in attempting to fulfill his cherished dream --- getting to America…” – Variety

The film will close the Festival after a hugely successful three weeks with a record number of sold out sessions and immense support for the Festival from the Greek and non Greek community.

Closing Night will be hosted by Channel 9 personality Helen Kapalos.
Tickets cost $20 including culinary treats after the screening.

Georges Mediterranean Bar & Grill on King St Wharf will hosts a closing night party to celebrate a fantastic Festival with tickets costing $20 including Mezedes & a glass of wine.
