OPENING NIGHT FILM

Brides
Directed by Pantelis Voulgaris,
Executive Producer, Martin Scorsese

Opening night will feature the Australian première of the multi award winning film Brides.

Brides, winner of 10 awards at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival including Best Feature Film, is a bittersweet love story set against the tribulations of a 1922 Atlantic crossing of 700 proxy brides, aboard the SS King Alexander, on their way to America to meet their destined husbands.

Our special guests this year are director Pantelis Voulgaris, author and Brides’ scriptwriter Ioanna Karystiani, and Alex Dimitriades, who will be our host for this very special night.

The screening will be followed by a reception at the Martini Restaurant & Bar with a wonderful selection of Greek food, good wine and cocktails.

THE ESSENTIAL VIEWING GUIDE

Hostage (2004)

A powerful and confronting film which follows the plight of a young Albanian immigrant seeking justice in order to restore his honour. Based on true events, Hostage pays homage to human dignity and self-respect.

Another gripping piece of filmmaking from Constantine Giannaris (The Edge of the City, One Day in August), arguably the most controversial contemporary Greek filmmaker.

America America (1963)

Set at the turn of the last century, this Elia Kazan masterpiece tells the story of a young man’s odyssey from Asia Minor to ‘the land of hope and opportunity’- America. Don’t miss the rare opportunity to see this film.

It’s a Long Road (1997)

Three independent stories of three middle aged men who, in confronting their personal demons, find themselves at crossroads in their lives. According to David Stratton,
“(The) intimate portraits of three tormented characters are filled with compassion and affection”.
One of Voulgaris’ finest films.

Liza and all the others (2003)

Set in hip modern day Athens, this cross between Bridget Jones’s Diary and Sex in the City follows the encounters of an attractive young woman in her pursuit of the ideal male partner.
