Welcome to the 2005 Greek Film Festival of Canberra.

Canberra’s third annual Greek Film Festival opens at Electric Shadows Cinemas on Thursday 15 September with a bittersweet love story set against the tribulations of a 1922 Atlantic crossing of 700 mail order brides to America.

Directed by Pantelis Voulgaris and with executive producer Martin Scorsese, Brides is one of Greece’s biggest box office successes, receiving ten awards at the 2004 Thessaloniki International Film Festival and critical acclaim across the global community.

Brides is one of seven celebrated films being screened in this year’s Greek Film Festival of Canberra, which makes up part of the National 2005 Greek Film Festival being held in major cities around the country through September and October.

The Greek Film Festival Association of Canberra is proud to present the 2005 program, which again promises another season of the best of contemporary Greek cinema, as well as some classics to celebrate Greece’s endeavors in cinematic history.

The program includes a mosaic of multi-award-winning films, from accomplished as well as emerging young directors, such as renowned Hostage, Dust and Like Chef Like God, as well as the visually poetic Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow by Theo Angelopoulos’ who’s last feature film , Eternity and A Day, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1998.

The program also features two classics: Elis Kazan’s Academy Award winning America America (1963), based on his family’s immigration to the United States from Constantinople in the early 1900s; and the classic 1950’s comedy The Counterfeit Coin – celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of Greece’s most significant films.

The 2005 Greek Film Festival of Canberra will commence 15-21 September.

We would like to thank our partners, Electric Shadows and The Greek Film Centre, and all our sponsors and supporters for their generous support, with particular mention to the Festival’s principal sponsor, The Hellenic Club of Canberra.
